RICE.
JANE MUGAMBI 9TH DEC 2010.

In a bid to recover loans owed to it by defaulting rice farmers, a co-operative society in Kirinyaga County has resorted to using hired goons to forcefully harvest farmers' produce.

In a move that is not sitting well with the farmers and Mwea MP, Peter Gitau, the Mwea Multipurpose Co-operative Society has hired the services of the local Okoa gang who yesterday started harvesting the rice under the protection of armed policemen.

The gang, supported by a lorry to truck away the harvested produce, made lightning raids in shambas in Wamumu and Thiba blocks of the giant Mwea Irrigation Scheme as helpless farmers watched.

The MP and farmers accused the society of robbing them, saying their action was against a directive by the Co-operatives Appeals Tribunal that had advised the co-operative to devise other methods of recovering their money, other than harvesting farmers' crops forcefully.

The MP accused the local security machinery of abetting robbery by protecting the Okoa gang since there was no mechanism of determining the amount of paddy rice necessary to cover the defaulted loans.

Trouble for the farmers started four years ago when they delivered their produce to the society but it was unable to sell the rice because of uncontrolled imports.

The tribunal found that the society owes the same farmers money while it had not remitted money deducted from farmers to the National Irrigation Board (NIB) for water use.

A farmer, Mr. Samson Njuguna said the society had not remitted shs 73 million to the NIB and had not paid any dividends on income from machinery that the farmers bought after contributing shs 3,000 and two bags of paddy each.

Wilson Wokabi, another farmer whose rice was harvested yesterday, said he had refused the loan after the society refused to pay him for previous crop deliveries

The two farmers said the interest on the loans taken in form of inputs and mechanical services during the 2007 crop season had grown to 63 per cent.

The co-operative's officials refused to comment on the issue when the Star called.

Speaking on phone Mwea MP Peter Gitau said that he has consulted with the cooperatives minister Joe Nyaga who is going to take audience with the Internal security Permanent secretary Francis Kimemia.

He said that the PS is going to direct the provincial administrators to stop using the police to offer security when the rice is being cut by the saccos.

Gitau went on to say that the Cooperative minister will be addressing the issue which has turned to be thorny to most rice farmers in the near future assuring them that they are going to harvest their remaining acres without fear.

Family pleads for in-depth investigations regarding a murder case.

Family pleads for in-depth investigations regarding a murder case.

JANE MUGAMBI 21ST NOV 2010.

A family in Kirinyaga South is calling on the government to intervene and ensure thorough investigations are conducted regarding a case in which their son Alexander Chomba is being accused of killing a resident Karuangi village in PIAI area.

The family says that police in Kirinyaga south are insisting on Charging their son with murder whereas reports by the post mortem investigations and witnesses indicates that the deceased may have died due to a farm accident.

The accused father Cyprian Ndambiri says that its is unfair for the police to hold his son in custody since November 12 at Wang'uru police station without even considering talking to his sons colleagues at a quarry where they engaged in murram digging during the day of the deceased death.

Ndambiri said that the police would have considered questioning a boy who is believed to have found the 60 year old Muchira Gutu moments after the incident who told the boy that he had been pierced by a nappier grass stem in his farm.

The OCPD Apollo Onyonyi reiterates that the accused slashed his neighbor with a Panga after disputes over a bean patch adding that police they have a strong case to arraign him in court and charge him with murder tomorrow (Today).

Post mortem investigation reports carried out by Dr. S. M. Maingi, a Pathologist at the Embu Provincial General Hospital seems to support the accused claims of innocence as it concludes that Muchira died of excessive blood loss from a shallow wound that is contradictory with the claims of a panga cut. The report concludes that deceased died of “acute blood loss due to a superficial leg injury.”

John Nyaga, who had hired the accused and his friends to load the murram, notes that he was with Chomba until the time he paid them and he drove off. It was as he drove from the quarry that he had screams after the deceased whose deteriorating condition was discovered after walking home

Although Nyaga informed the area chief and the police that he had spent the day with the accused there is no investigating officer who has visited him to establish the authenticity of his point.

On his part, the accused observes that the dispute over the beans patch had already been solved amicably after the deceased reportedly explained how some herbicides may have unintentionally been blown by the wind to his patch.

He says that he left his home and was later to meet with Nyaga who was looking for people to load murram into a track but was later to be arrested and charged with murder.

The family says they fear their son, who is the sole provider for his young family that includes a three-year old daughter and 11-month old son faces a long and costly trial for a crime he did not commit.

They are now appealing to higher police authorities to intervene and ensure thorough investigations are conducted for justice and fairness to be upheld in the case.

OVER 7000 Identification cards are lying at the Kirinyaga District registration offices.

He said that the youths apply for duplicates pretending that the original has gotten lost a mostly when they are looking for jobs citing the recruitment of the police forces where after apply and not being succefull, they do not collect them.
Mr. Muriungi added that some have been in the desk for more than two years saying that they have ben using the provincial administration where the owners can pick them from their offices.

He however said that some people still have the 1st generation Id’s which are barring them from getting services saying that the office is open for them to renew and stop using brokers who are cheating the elderly for exploitation.
Mr.Muriungi added that some children have been adopting names which are not in their parents Id cards resulting to wastage of materials and double registration.
“Parents should get concerned on the names that their children are using. If a child is of single mother, the mother should give a name that should coincide with the child’s Id to reduce wastage” He added.
Recently when the Immigration Minister Otieno Kanjwang’visited Kirinyaga central, he found the Id’s pilled up in the office waiting for the youths to collect them.
He said that the youths are complaining of delays yert they are the ones who are not collecting them.
Mr. Kajwang’ added that in the larger Kirinyaga, working in the office is below capacity saying that the workers should come out of the slumber.

The minister said that Kirinyaga has a 46% registration which he termed it as poor compared with Thika which has 108% where he said that the registration is being done poorly.
Accompanying the minister is the area Mp Ngata Kariuki who said that unless his office is strict, very many aliens are in the district illegally.
On the Birth certificate, he said that the reason as to why parents are rushing at the wrong time due to ignorance and lack of concern.
Mr.Muriungi added that many parents are producing 1st generation ID where they have been in the office for more than three weeks but cannot get the certificate without the production of the 2nd generation ID.
“Parents are very ignorant, how can they wait to collect the certificate when the child is in form four, what have they been doing since birth” he added.
He said that parents should be very cautious when relaxing in some matters saying that what if the offices burnt down who could they have blamed.
“fire can break out any time and the parents cannot ask the office as to why their documents were in.They should be concerned and collect them in time” Mr.Muriungi commented.

Kiraitu told DP members that there was need for PNU affiliated parties to come up with single candidate or take opposition seats in the next government.
“We are now where we were in 1992 when the opposition was looking for single candidate to face Moi but what happened we were on the opposition seat after the election” Kiraitu said.
He said Kibaki was the unifying factor among the PNU affiliated parties and that now his term is coming to an end their was need for parties that have been relying on him to put their acts together and present one candidate that will face their main competitors ODM.
Murungaru said that DP will not be going into any pre-government arrangement since they have been short change by [parties that are formed for convenience to get into power.
“DP has been all the time the looser since we have donated a presidential candidate but our partners have not given us equal respect in a collation” he said.
He said that DP will be fielding it own candidate but will form a coalition after election more so with like minded parties.
The formers Kieni Mp said that said that DP was major political party in the politics arena and that it was not going to be swallowed again by parties that are only out to get to power and forget the main players in their quest.
Murungaru said that the DP had resolve in accordance with it traditional based on the variance with the view to being the preeminent political party in the country in the leading up to 2012

be professionals

BE PROFESSIONALS,
JANE MUGAMBI
08TH FEB 2010.
Print Journalist, radio, television presenters have been told to be ethical.
Speaking in a workshop organized by the media council of Kenya at Sportsman arms in Nanyuki town, Royal media news editor and a media veteran said that many presenters have turned to be advertisers.
He said that advertising and editorial activities cannot rhyme.
Mr. Njau went on to say that journalists should follow the code of conducts.
He said that the media should sell space and not interfere with the editorial department.
“It is very wrong for presenters to take a break from reading news and have a commercial, its very unethical” he added.
The media veteran added that the media in Kenya has since shifted from professionalism to being compromised by the politicians, and the commercials.
He said that Journalist should accept freedom of the media as a human right and exercise it freely.
Mr. Njau said that professionalism should be guided by the society where they should be responsible to viewers, listeners, readers And not government, proprietors and the commercials.
“What a journalist writes should be very decent, be responsible, accurate, fair play but we have diverted our professionalism to sex matters diverting from the call” Mr. Njau added.
He said that some presenters have turned to be advertisers of products and not going according to their professional and code of ethics.
“Some news anchors, presenters are seen in the teles while advertising commodities. it is not bad to earn another shilling outta the organization but are not exercising their education. They should leave being anchors and stay in advertising” Mr. Mutego Njau added.
He said warned the presenters on being engaged in the adverts saying that they should chose on line of duty and not being at two places at the same time.
Mr. Njau cited a case where his news anchor was involved in advertising a commodity where he said that the advert took the anchors job and decided to get into adverting without his will.
He however said that vernacular radio stations, radios and print media should not deviate from their common goal, idea and be swayed away by the commercials which he said are controlling the media for a very long time.
“Big companies have turned the media be dependent on them such that they “media” cannot publish any bad story on them for fear of lack of getting adverts from them” He added.
Concurring his sentiments were the lecturer of United States University University Joe Khadi said that research should done to identify new problems, suggest solutions saying that journalists have been made puppets by the advertising industry.
“Many are being lost in advertisings instead of sticking to their role of reading news and editing news. they should either leave the news department and join the advertising department since noone can do two jobs and they succeed”.Joe Khadi added.
