World Veterinary day

 World Veterinary day.....

Veterinarians have called upon county government  to employ more health technicians citing shortage.

Speaking in Kutus while marking the world veterinary day,Doctor Victor Yamu an animal protection officer disclosed that counties do not have enough work force that has made it hard to handle animal welfare.

Yamu said animals have been mistreated for long due to lack of laws to regulate and guide how to handle them

"Kenya lacks enough manpower in the veterinary sector,we urge Kenyans to push for more deployment ".

He added that the work of veterinaries is intense and that there is need to look into animal matters.

"When we have rotten maize in the silos,we give it to animals mixed within their meal, the toxins will get to you plate either through meat and milk, there is need to give animals clean water, food to avoid diseases.

He noted that 75% of diseases are said to be from animal products due to poor feeding habits to animals.

Yamu urged Kenyans to ensure that their domestic animals have clean shelter saying dirty ones were a breeding grounds for diseases.

"Animal hygiene must be of high standards and farmers must ensure their domestic animals are injected to prevent diseases".

He disclosed that there is a bill pending in parliament that if approved will see animals respected and protected.

He said Kenyans have to join hands  and push for the bill to be passed citing the current legislators are sourcing for votes instead of passing crucial bills.

"We want Kenyans to sign a petition that will push our government in enforcing and passing the bills that are pending approvals by our Parliament, unfortunately the current leadership is pit sourcing for votes instead of passing crucial bills that are of benefit to wananchi" He added.

"The animal welfare and protection bill is in Parliament, we have to join hands and ensure that it passes,we expect it to pass in the next Parliament since the current one is busy sourcing for their votes"Doctor Yamu added.

He says when the law passes it will create county welfare committees, whose responsibility will be to look into the welfare of animals.

"This bill will bar people from carrying chicken on top of vehicles and bicycles, also handling of animals will be done in a decent manner"he added.

"When the petition is signed the government  will heed to it,pushing for better services"...

Currently there is no legal framework on those that violate animal freedom, adding that once the petition is signed it will strengthen the existing law of prevention of cruelty to animals cap 360.

"We want to enforce the protection and prevention act so as to stop cruelty to animals".he added.

Arrests on animal offenders have been done by Kenya Society for the Protection and care of Animals(KSPCA).

She also cited the high prices on petrol,as having crippled farm activities.
