SLUM DWELLERS SCORE A'S WITH DETERMINATION.
JANE MUGAMBI
There was jubilations at Kerugoya town when two cousins from starehe centre scored A’s in their KCSE.
Kelvin Ndung’u Kahura 18, and Kennedy Kahura Mundia 18, managed to be position 93 and 31 in Nairobi province despite not getting any ranking amongst the best 100 students.
Kelvin scored 86.625 saying it was a remarkable mark for him to join a public campus and take neuro-surgeon course so that he can treat his mentally ill mother.
He said that despite being from a single parent, he put all efforts not to disappoint her but prove to others that single parents’ kids can work.
He added that despite being from Korogocho slums, the pathetic condition in which he lived in made him stronger to read hard.
“In slums, there is a lot of evils which go round many children leave school and get involved in crime related activities. On my side, I had to work extra hard to prove to others that ‘slum’ children have brains” said Kelvin.
His cousin Kennedy Kahura Mundia scored 86.94 a mark that his single mother could not believe.
At Kerugoya Municipality, he scored 431 a mark that saw him join Starehe boys centre where he said the school nurtured him to who he is now.
Kennedy said that in starehe boys centre, he realized that saying one was from a slum students regarded one as not serious but to prove them wrong, he dedicated his time in books and not crime related activities.
According to Kerugoya municipality Cyrus Munene Mwenje, the boys were not recognized since they were average but they have proved that being average with determination, one can score a good grade.
He went on to say that the two lead 2005 KCPE in Kirinyaga district repeating the same in their KCSE saying that though not ranked top 100, they have shown being an average pupil there is room for improvement.
Mr.Mwenje went on to say that Kelvin was sent to the school by the catholic mission after his mentally ill mother was unable to pay for his fees at Ngunyumu primary school in Korogocho slums.
He said that other pupils in the school should not feel intimidated but be inspired to good performance.
The school managing director said that the school has sponsored very many pupils from poor families in the district so that they can achieve their dreams.
