KERUGOYA RETAIL MARKET CLOSED BY PUBLIC HEALTH OFFICERS.
JANE MUGAMBI 2ND JULY 2010.
KERUGOYA retail market has been closed by the public health over lack of proper sanitation.
Deputy public health officer John Githinji said that the market will be closed until when Kerugoya municipal council meets the required health standards.
Mr. Githinji added that they had issued the council with closing orders report stipulating that they had not put a concrete floor, proper drainage, sewerage, refuse pit and water.
He added that if the traders are allowed to occupy the market place, their health is gong to be compromised.
The public health said that they have closed the new market so that the council can rectify on what the health officers has identified as health hazards to the traders adding that it will be opened until when the council rectifies.
“If the market is run without a proper drainage system, refuse pit, we are afraid that their will be an outbreak of diseases” added Mr. Githinji.
He said that since this is the second time for the town clerk to relocate the traders against the public health officers’ permission, he will take the clerk to court for failing to comply and incitement.
He said the town clerk decided on his own without taking a step to consult the public health officers on what could be remaining for the completion of the market.
The traders paid 100,000/ each for a stall in the new market and through the European Union funded the construction a move that has surprised many traders whoa now want transparency on how the money was spent.
The market has been in construction for over 2 years contrary to what the traders had been promised a year.
To solve the traders from holding a demo, council deputy mayor Peterson Wachira calmed the irate traders by allowing them to sell their goods outside the new market.
He said that they will be holding a meeting on Monday for a way forward for them in solving the crisis.
Mr. Wachira added that the council askaris will be in the market 24 hours to safeguard the racks, goods that have been left by the traders.
