JANE MUGAMBI 10TH FEB 2010.
A family of five and their shamba man was yesterday rescued by police from the hands of kidnappers dressed in police uniform in Kerugoya town.
According to Boniface Njoroge, they were at their home in Kigumo in Kangari taking supper at 9pm when three armed men entered their home and took him hostage.
Narrating the ordeal,he said that they went straight to him and told him that they have some information of him having withdrawn 200,000/- and they needed the cash.
He first resisted and was slapped with a panga at the back and ordered to sleep with his face looking down.
Mr.Njoroge said that to cool the guys he told them the much he had withdrawn was 10,000/- of which he gave out and remembered that he had 1,500/- which was to be the fare to her daughter who was to go back to the university on Monday.
He said together with his wife, daughter, last born son,his elderly shamba man were put in his pick up and since it had a cover body they could not see anything and were drove off to unknown destination at 3 a.m.
The wife was separated from him and was put between the two armed "policemen" and only heard them say that they were sent and were taking them to Meru to their boss.
Mr.Boniface said that at 4a.m he was ordered to withdraw some cash at Kerugoya Equity bank and was taken in wooden house and after one and a half hours later, they took him to the same bank and he withdrew more and to release him they took his phone for him not to communicate.
"They ordered me to withdraw cash in Kerugoya at gun point and since I had the pain in me,I agreed and withdrew 10,000/ and gave it to them"Mr.Boniface added.
He said that he approached a taxi driver who took him to the police station where he narrated his ordeal and how much he had given out to the kidnappers but the worrying thing was that ,he had to see his family after he gave out a ransom of 400,000/- where he had to take the money at Kerugoya stadium where he was to meet a person to receive it.
Mr.Boniface said that after reporting the matter, he was given three police officers and two CID officer but the crew was very informed and after I told them I have the money, they said that they cannot come for it since he had involved the police in the negotiations and had to wait for a lady to pick the money.
He said that he was told to board a boda boda to Kagumo but after a kilometer unfortunately they spotted police and escaped and was ordered to send the 11,500 he had withdrawn to a certain number.
He said that after some minutes in Kagumo, a well dressed lady was dropped by a boda boda and headed towards an M-pesa shop and as he was about to give the money to the kidnappers she was arrested.
He said that the police failed to arrest the two waiting for the money since they were in uniform, had the CID vehicle which seems to be familiar with and went away immediately leaving the lady behind.
He said he was left alone as his family members were taken away and was told that he will see them after he agred to part with the 400,000/- and taken to Mwea.
According to the wife,Rachel Warigia,on Monday night they were left guarded by one kidnapper who fed them on ugali and soda but yesterday morning he was very generous to buy them tea and a loaf of bread to share while the rest went to look for the husband.
"The person we were left with bought us tea and bread yesterday morning but they used to feed us with Ugali and soda" she said.
She said that they were put in a wooden house in Kerugoya town where she learnt after their release after the two called to tell her that they are not safe since the husband had involved the police and they had to be their regular visitor in Kigumo.
she said earlir on they had not received and threats or had any attacks saying that maybe they trailled them to their home.
According to the husband,he feard for his life since they have marked him and have knwon his home.
"I am fearing for my life since they have marked me,know my home and have said that they will be ouir regular visitors and with the treament, they will kill me"Boniface added.
The wife said that it is through GOD;'s grace that they were alive, not harmed.
"Ni damu ya yesu imetukomboa, hatungekuwa hai"(Its through the blood of Jesus that we are alive, and safe) said Rachel.
Mrs.Njoroge said that they were given 3,000/- as fare back home after they declined to go without the husband.
According to area OCPD Francis Kumut, the family was kidnapped on 7th Feb at their home in Kigumo and were kept under tight care of their kidnappers in Kerugoya town in a wooden house believed to be outskirts of the town.
He said that Mr.Boniface had given out 21,500/- to the kidnappers and told them to wait for more as he hustlled since his account had nothing and used a relative to gather some cash to no avail.
He said that on sensing danger, he reported the matter to the police who helped him to recover his family and was found abandoned in Makutano junction along Nairobi-Mwea road.
Mr.Kumut said that they abardoned Boniface pick up and carjacked a taxi vehicle where they headed to either Mwea or Embu.
