A 18BILLION WATER DAM TO BE CONSTRUCTED FOR THE GROWTH OF RICE IN GICHUGU.
JANE MUGAMBI 20TH FEB 2012.
The resettlement that is being done for the construction of a water
dam in Gichugu for the conservation of water in the canals is
underway.
Mwea Mp Peter Gitau has said that the project at a cost of18 billion
that is funded by JICA to construct a dam will change the lower part
of Mwea and Mbeere.
He said that the water is expected to be channeled to the lower parts
of Mwea pat magomano where when the river water lowers; there are is
hit by drought and the nearest point where the residents get water is
over 20 kilometers.
Gitau added that the project will also make Mwea be water sufficient
pointing out that even the rice fields where when drought strikes
there is water problems, there will be enough water supply to grow
rice.
For two years there has been a water problem in the area where rice
growth was affected very much reducing the yields.
HE has however urged the contractor that man power should be given to
the locals citing that very many youths are jobless and they should
benefit from that.
HE said that engaging them into the construction it will make then
busy and that they will not engage in illicit drugs and illicit
groups.
