CONMEN JAILED FOR TWO YEARS FOR STEALING FROM AN IDP IN KIRINYAGA.

Two conmen have been jailed for 2 years by a Kerugoya court for
defrauding an Internally Displaced person in Kirinyaga County.
Julius Karaithi and Stephen Karima of Warima and co advocates appeared
before Chief Magistrate Hanna Ndung’u facing charges of defrauding
Mugera Maganjo of money pretending that they were to sell him an acre
piece of land in Kerugoya town.
Stephen Karima was further sentenced to 15 more months by the
magistrate after he was found guilty for forging a land agreement
letter pretending that it was genuine having been drawn by Warima
Advocates.
Making her judgment, the magistrate pointed out that the offence is
very heinous saying that the two should serve the jail since they took
advantage of a needy person who was displaced during the post election
violence.
MS. Ndung’u also added that land cases in courts are very many citing
that the two will be an example to others who want to defraud
unsuspecting Kenyans of their money and land.
“In Kirinyaga land cases are a problem and if brokers are the ones who
are depriving people of their money to benefit themselves, then the
two should be an example to others who are thinking to make others
suffer” added the magistrate.
The offence was committed on diverse dates between April 22nd and may
13th 2008 at Kerugoya township where they defrauded an Internally
displaced person of 450,000/- pretending they had a parcel of land
that they were in a position to sell to them.
In Mitigation, through their lawyer, they said that they were
remorseful and prayed for a non-custodial sentence which she refused.
The magistrate said that the court found the two guilty of the offence
citing that the documents produced in court as being signed by Warima
Advocates as an agreement has proved to have been forged and not from
the said advocate adding that the sentence will run concurrently.
