KARUA-SUCESSION.

KARUA-SUCESSION.
JANE MUGAMBI

Narc- Kenya chairperson Martha Karua has said President Kibaki should
not name a successor after his term expires in the coming general
elections.

She said the electorates should be given a chance to decide who will
occupy the highest office by voting adding that Kenya was not a
monarch where leadership was through succession.
"Kenyans are supposed to be given a chance to elect their leader of
choice and not through being forced to make a decision through the
appointment of the president" added Karua.

Karua however observed that there was nothing wrong with presidential
contenders asking for the backing from president Kibaki but insisted
he should not name a successor.

“There should be no kingmaker in the country. Let the voters decide in
the ballot the person they want to be their president,” said the
Gichugu Mp.

Karua who spoke to journalists today at Kutus Town after touring her
constituency said Kenyans must be careful with leaders they wanted to
elect adding that not all individuals have the interest of public at
heart.

She pointed out that leaders must unite the country during the
election year but regretted that victims of the post poll violence
were yet to be fully resettled four years down the line.

“It is very unfortunate that leaders have not come together to preach
peace. The weaker in the society have continued to suffer as a
consequence” she observed.

On the debate of the phasing out of the 14 seater matatus, the
presidential aspirant urged the government to come up with an
effective public transport policy to sort out the mess in the sector.

She said stakeholders in the industry must be consulted observing that
it was unconstitutional to force matatu operators to join savings and
credit cooperatives.

“If we get rid of the 14 seaters a lot of jobs will be lost and the
problem with the public transport will not have been solved.” She
said.

Karua said over 300,000 people risk loosing their jobs if the
government implemented the phasing out with operators threatening to
go on strike in few weeks time.
